Niobium and niobium alloy have good corrosion resistance to molten alkali metal, small thermal neutron absorption cross section of atoms, good compatibility to nuclear fuel, and can be used as nuclear energy reactor materials. Niobium titanium alloys (such as Nb-50Ti) and Nb3Sn compounds have excellent superconducting properties and are practical superconducting materials. Niobium-titanium alloy wire and niobium-zirconium alloy wire have good constant elasticity, no ferromagnetism, corrosion resistance and other comprehensive properties, and can be made of elastic components for special purposes. Niobium and some niobium alloys have excellent corrosion resistance in most chemical media, the cost is cheaper than tantalum, and can be used as corrosion resistant parts in chemical, textile and other departments.
Niobium alloys can also be prepared by powder metallurgy. Several methods can be used to prepare niobium alloy powders, including gas-atomization, calcining, mechanical fusion, high-temperature diffusion, or hydride dehydrogenation processes.
Niobium and niobium alloy alloy rod, niobium alloy plate has high strength at high temperatures, and has relatively small density compared with other high temperature and high strength metals such as tungsten and tantalum, and it is easy to process and form, so it is commonly used as a key component of rocket engines.
