What is Rhenium?

Rhenium is a silver-white metal. Its melting point is the third highest among all elements after tungsten and carbon. Rhenium has the highest boiling point. Rhenium has a hexagonal close-packed crystal structure. The lattice constants of rhenium are a=276.1pm and c=445.6pm. Rhenium metal is very ductile when annealed and can be bent and rolled up.

Rhenium-molybdenum alloys are superconductors at 10K, while tungsten-rhenium alloys have superconducting temperatures between 4 and 8K. Rhenium metal becomes a superconductor at 1.697±0.006K. Rhenium blocks resist alkali, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, dilute nitric acid, and aqua regia at standard temperatures and pressures.

Application of Rhenium

Rhenium and its alloys are widely used in aerospace, electronics and petrochemical industries. At present, one of the main uses of rhenium is as a catalyst in the petrochemical industry. Tantalum and tungsten alloys containing rhenium are considered to be the most high temperature resistant metal alloys.

Tungsten-rhenium thermocouples can measure the highest temperature of 3100℃. Metals plated with rhenium (such as spacecraft metal surfaces) can increase wear resistance, so rhenium has become an important material in aerospace, rockets and missiles.

In addition, the use of rhenium tungsten alloy to manufacture the tube cathode, the life is 100 times longer than tungsten. The use of rhenium in the manufacture of electrical contactors, especially the manufacture of permanent magnet generator contactors on Marine ships, is durable.
