What is Hafnium?

Hafnium is a metallic element. Its element symbol is Hf. It has an atomic number of 72 and atomic weight of 178.49. Hafnium is chemically very similar to zirconium. Hafnium has good corrosion resistance. Hafnium is not susceptible to erosion by ordinary acid-base aqueous solutions. Hafnium is soluble in hydrofluoric acid to form fluorine complexes.

At high temperatures, hafnium can also be directly combined with oxygen, nitrogen and other gases to form oxides and nitrides. Pure hafnium has the properties of plasticity, easy processing and resistance to high temperature and corrosion. It is an important material in the atomic energy industry.

Preparation of Hafnium Products

The preparation method of hafnium rod is mainly hafnium smelting ingot. Hafnium ingot is prepared by forging, extrusion, rotary forging (or drawing) process.

Application of Hafnium

Hafnium is used as a cathode for X-ray tubes. Alloys of hafnium and tungsten or molybdenum are used as electrodes for high voltage discharge tubes. Hafnium is commonly used in the X-ray cathode and tungsten wire manufacturing industries. Hafnium can be used to produce control rods and protective devices for atomic reactors. Hafnium alloys can be used as the leading edge protective coating for rocket nozzles and glide re-entry vehicles. Hf-Ta alloy can be used to make tool steel and resistance materials.

Hafnium can be used as an getter in many aeration systems. Hafnium getter can remove oxygen, nitrogen and other unwanted gases present in the system. Hafnium is often used as an additive in hydraulic oil to prevent the volatilization of hydraulic oil during high-risk operations.
