What is Zirconium 702?

Zirconium 702 is easy to process. It has the best resistance to uniform corrosion. Zirconium 702 is chemically active. It is very sensitive to changes in welding conditions. Zirconium has excellent corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid at a concentration not exceeding 70%.

Since stainless steel and nickel alloys cannot be used at high temperature, 20% sulfuric acid and 40-60% boiling temperature below sulfuric acid range, zirconium has an irreplaceable role in sulfuric acid environment.

Importance of pure zirconium production

  • The Zr ingot is generally opened in the β phase zone, which is conducive to deformation and reduces the segregation of alloying elements.

  • The secondary forging temperature is lower than the blank temperature, and pure zirconium 702 is forged in the high temperature zone of α phase zone. The final forging temperature shall not be lower than 700℃.

  • Hot rolling temperature and secondary forging temperature is similar, extrusion temperature is lower.

  • Pure zirconium has good plasticity at liquid nitrogen temperature.

Production of zirconium strip

  • Zirconium strips, zirconium plates or zirconium billets are milled and cleaned as required. Zirconium strips, zirconium plates or zirconium billets are heated according to the process requirements, and the temperature is controlled at 600 ~900℃.

  • Zirconium strip, zirconium plate or zirconium billet is heated and then hot rolled by furnace coil mill or continuous mill. The material is rolled directly at a coilable thickness and hot rolled to a thickness that can be rolled in a cold mill. The final hot rolling temperature of a furnace coil mill or a continuous mill shall not be lower than 600℃.

  • The coiled-zirconium strips are coiled in a production line in a synchronous process of annealing, shot peening and pickling.

  • . Zirconium strips are acid-washed and cold-rolled into thin zirconium strips. Zirconium foil is cold rolled after intermediate annealing due to work hardening. Thin zirconium strips and foil of various thicknesses are eventually rolled out.

Production of zirconium tube and zirconium alloy tube

  • Zirconium and zirconium alloy are forged and cut into ingots. Or zirconium and zirconium alloy forging bar billet cut after quenching solid solution treatment to get billet. Then the zirconium billet is machined to get the billet to be extruded.

  • The zirconium ingot to be extruded is lubricated. The lubricated zirconium ingots are heated and squeezed. It is made into extruded tube billets.

  • Extruded zirconium tube billet after surface treatment by strong spinning, zirconium and zirconium alloy spinning parts are obtained.

  • Zirconium and zirconium alloy spinning parts are annealed after surface treatment.

  • After annealing, zirconium and zirconium alloy spinning parts repeat strong spinning. The processing times from surface treatment process and annealing process to corresponding process are 1~3 times.

Zirconium is an important material in weapons such as armored vehicles, tanks, artillery and bulletproof plates.

Zirconium wire can be used as welding material, grid plate support, cathode support and grid plate material. Zirconium wire can also be used as an air plasma cutting machine electrode head.
