Zirconium & Zirconium Alloys

Zirconium is a chemical element. Its atomic number is 40. Zirconium is a high melting point metal. It's light gray. The surface of zirconium is easy to form an oxide film, which looks shiny. Zirconium is resistant to corrosion. It is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia.

Zirconium alloys are solid solutions of zirconium or other metals. Zirconium has a very low thermal neutron absorption cross section, high hardness, ductility and corrosion resistance. The main use of zirconium alloys is in the field of nuclear technology, such as fuel rods in nuclear reactors. The typical composition of nuclear grade zirconium alloys is more than 95% zirconium and less than 2% tin, niobium, iron, chromium, nickel and other metals, which are added to improve mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Zirconium alloy in 300 ~ 400℃ high temperature and high pressure water and steam has good corrosion resistance, moderate mechanical properties, low atomic thermal neutron absorption cross section. Therefore, the main uses of zirconium alloys can be used as core structural materials for water-cooled nuclear reactors, such as fuel cladding, pressure tubes, supports and orifice pipes. Zirconium has excellent corrosion resistance to hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, alkali and salt. So zirconium alloys are also used to make corrosion-resistant parts and pharmaceutical devices. Zirconium has a strong affinity with oxygen, nitrogen and other gases. Zirconium and zirconium alloys are also widely used as non-evapotranspiration gasses in the electric vacuum and bulb industries. Zirconium also has excellent luminous properties, so it is used as a flash and fireworks material.

The application of zirconium and its alloys

Nuclear energy: The properties of zirconium alloy are high melting point, corrosion resistance, high strength and high temperature stability. So zirconium and zirconium alloys can be used as fuel rods and structural materials in nuclear reactors.

Aerospace industry: Zirconium has excellent mechanical properties and high temperature resistance, so zirconium and its alloys are widely used in the aerospace field. Zirconium alloys can be made into components such as blades, jet tubes and combustion chambers in aircraft engines. Zirconium alloys can also be used for components such as spacecraft housings, combustion chambers and turbines.

Medical industry: Zirconium alloy has high strength, good biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. Therefore, zirconium alloys can improve the long-term durability and biocompatibility of implants. Zirconium can be used to make artificial joints, dental implants and other biomedical materials.

Chemical industry: Zirconium alloy has excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature stability, so it can be used in harsh chemical environments for a long time.

Zirconium compounds can be used as catalysts, preservatives, catalyst carriers and oxidants. Zirconium alloys can also be used to manufacture equipment such as reactors, heat exchangers and reactors.

Electronic technology industry: Zirconium alloys can be used to make battery electrodes. Zirconium and its alloys can be used as additives for high temperature superconducting materials, which can increase their superconducting temperature and superconducting current density. Zirconium is also widely used in the field of nanotechnology. It can make nanotubes, nanocrystals and nanomaterials, among others.

Metal surface coating industry: Zirconium can be used to make metal surface coatings, which are used to prevent corrosion and increase the hardness of metal surfaces.

Zirconium alloys can also be used to manufacture high temperature corrosion resistant metal coatings with excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature stability. In addition, the wear and corrosion resistance of zirconium alloy also makes it an ideal choice for manufacturing tool materials such as drills, saw blades, etc.
