The main applications of tantalum, niobium and titanium in Japan

Japan's demand for tantalum, niobium and titanium is primarily manifested in the "core sector" of electronics and semiconductors. The three major electronics and semiconductor factories account for more than half of the global tantalum capacitors, providing core components for mobile phones and 5G base stations; tantalum high-k films are also a key layer in chips. Niobium transforms into Nb-Ti superconductivity, which is an important material for MRI magnets and quantum bits.

The automotive industry follows closely, with titanium and niobium jointly driving the lightweight revolution. Titanium alloy exhaust pipes and valves have achieved weight reduction and efficiency improvement; solid-state batteries also expect to reduce weight with titanium casings. Niobium microalloy steel enables the vehicle frame to be thinner and lighter while still passing global crash tests.

In the aerospace and defense fields, Japan uses titanium to create "the sky and the shield". Titanium components for aircraft bodies and aircraft engines are all standardly made of Ti-6Al-4V; assembly lines and submarine pressure hulls also cannot do without titanium. Nitrogen-based superalloys are directly exposed to 1500 ℃ flames on the turbine blades of jet engines.

In the medical and energy sectors, titanium and tantalum have become the "bones of life and energy". Titanium artificial joints, dental implants, and minimally invasive surgical instruments dominate the global high-end market; tantalum porous bone repair materials are developed by the Japanese medical industry. In the energy sector, Nb-Ti superconducting magnets are provided, while titanium bipolar plates enable hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to travel further.

Finally, the demand for chemical and semiconductor manufacturing equipment continues to grow. Titanium acid-resistant reactors and seawater desalination pipes resist corrosion; tantalum linings safeguard the most demanding chemical environments in semiconductor etching machines and sulfuric acid production lines.
