Full analysis of tantalum sheet physical properties

Tantalum is a rare refractory metal, because of its unique physical and chemical properties, in the aerospace, electronic industry, chemical equipment and medical fields has an irreplaceable position. Tantalum sheet is one of the processing forms of tantalum metal, and its physical properties directly determine its application value in high-end fields.

Crystal structure
Tantalum has a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure (space group Im3m) with a lattice constant a=0.3306 nm. This structure gives it excellent ductility, and the cold-rolled tantalum sheet can be processed to an ultra-thin thickness of 0.01mm without breaking.

Tantalum plate density: 16.65 g/cm3 (20℃), higher than tungsten (19.25 g/cm3) but lower than gold (19.32 g/cm3)

Tantalum sheet specific strength (strength/density ratio) : better than most superalloys, especially suitable for lightweight high-strength parts.

Tantalum sheet high temperature stability:
Tantalum plate in vacuum or inert atmosphere, 1600℃ still maintain strength (tensile strength >100 MPa). Its high-temperature oxidation resistance stems from the compact Ta2O2 oxide film formed on the surface (which is self-repairing when thickness is <1 μm), which is superior to that of similar metals such as molybdenum and niobium.

Ta sheet Extreme corrosion resistance:
Acid resistance grade: can withstand boiling concentrated hydrochloric acid (37%), sulfuric acid (98%), nitric acid (68%)

Special environment: 200℃ molten alkali metal corrosion rate < 0.01mm /year

Electrochemical properties: Standard electrode potential -0.81 V (vs SHE), but surface passivation film makes its actual performance close to that of precious metals

Tantalum plate electromagnetic characteristics:
Resistivity: 13.5nΩ ·m (20℃), linearly increasing with temperature

Superconducting critical temperature: 4.47K (block)

Magnetic susceptibility: +1.82×10⁻⁴ (paramagnetic), suitable for high-precision electromagnetic equipment

Ta plate future development
With the advancement of additive manufacturing technology, tantalum sheets are breaking through traditional processing limitations:

Laser selective melting (SLM) tantalum can achieve a density of 99.6%

Graded porous tantalum (controllable porosity of 30-80%) is a breakthrough in orthopedic implants

Fortu Tech can produce and process tantalum alloys billet, tantalum alloys sheet, tantalum alloys foil, tantalum alloys plate, tantalum alloys rod, tantalum alloys wire, tantalum alloys tubes.
