Development of aerospace high temperature niobium alloys and C103, Nb521 niobium alloys

Compared with other kinds of superalloys, high temperature niobium alloy has the advantages of low density, high temperature (600~1600 ℃) specific strength, good cold and hot forming performance, good welding performance, etc., can be processed to form thin-wall and complex shape parts. Thrust chamber body extensions for attitude control/orbit control engines for rocket engines, satellites, spacecraft and missiles are one of the important candidate materials for aerospace structural components.

In aerospace, China's most used is niobium-hafnium alloy (Nb C-103) and niobium-tungsten alloy (Nb-521 alloys), at present, orbit control/attitude control engine refractory metal material thrust chamber has formed a "two generation" series of products. The "first generation" is niobium-hafnium alloy (Nb C-103) and the "second generation" is niobium-tungsten alloy (Nb-521 alloys).

C-103(Nb-10Hf-1Ti) Nb-C103 alloys rod is a low strength niobium alloy with good high temperature strength, excellent formability and weldability. Nb-C103 alloys rod and Nb-C103 alloys sheet are widely used in rocket propulsion and other fields, which is a very widely used niobium alloy.

Nb-C103 alloys wire by adding Hf, Ti and Zr alloy elements to achieve solid solution strengthening, of which Zr strengthening effect is more significant, Hf and trace W mainly improve the high temperature performance. Good formability and stable reliability make C-103 alloys rod have excellent cost performance, and further promote its application in the aerospace field.

Nb521 alloy rod is made of adding W, Mo, Zr alloying elements and a small amount of C elements to the niobium matrix, and the mechanical properties of niobium alloy at room temperature and high temperature are further improved by the combination of solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening. Nb521 alloy sheet is a medium strength plastic niobium alloy.

Nb521 niobium alloy has good room temperature formability, and can usually be used to fabricate a uniform transition nozzle extension section, but most of the nozzles are obtained by machining bars, which is difficult to machine and the material utilization rate is relatively low. Therefore, the study of near net forming and additive manufacturing of Nb521 niobium alloy is an effective method to improve the utilization rate of the alloy material.
