90% Tantalum 10% tungsten rod is a high-performance refractory metal alloy rod, which combines the excellent corrosion resistance of pure tantalum rods with the high strength and high melting point characteristics of pure tungsten rods. 90% Tantalum 10% tungsten alloy bars are widely used in the fields of chemical engineering, aerospace, nuclear industry, and medical care.The most remarkable characteristic of Ta10W bars is their astonishing high-temperature resistance, with a melting point of up to 3020°C, second only to pure tungsten (3422°C). This property ensures that they hardly soften or deform in high-temperature environments.
The thermal expansion coefficient of Ta10W rods is extremely low (6.5×10-6/K), allowing them to maintain dimensional stability under drastic temperature changes and avoiding cracks or failures caused by thermal stress. By adding 10% tungsten, the mechanical properties of tantalum 10 tungsten rods are significantly improved: the tensile strength at room temperature reaches 550-700 MPa, which is more than 2.5 times that of pure tantalum, while the elongation rate remains at 15-25%, combining high strength with good plasticity.

The 90% Tantalum 10% tungsten rod, with its extremely high strength (tensile strength > 700 MPa), a melting point of 3020°C, and outstanding corrosion resistance, has become a key structural material in extreme industrial environments. For example: the core component of high-temperature chemical reactors, the thermal end structure of supersonic aircraft, the control components of nuclear reactors, high-end medical implant devices, semiconductor single crystal growth equipment, and special welding electrode materials.
1. The core component of the high-temperature chemical reactor, the 90% tantalum 10% tungsten rod, replaces Hastelloy alloy in the concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid reaction vessels, increasing the service life by three times. Therefore, it is used as the stirring shaft. The Ta10W rod is also used as the processing material for the thermocouple protective sleeve because it can withstand 400°C boiling phosphoric acid corrosion. The tantalum 10 tungsten rod is also processed into valve stems for high-purity electronic-grade chemical transportation systems. The advantages of the 90Ta10W bar are that its corrosion rate in 160°C concentrated hydrochloric acid is <0.01mm/year, and it is resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking (superior to stainless steel 316L).
2. In the heat-end structure of supersonic aircraft, the tantalum-10 tungsten rod is used to manufacture the support rods of the ramjet engine combustion chamber, which can withstand aerodynamic heating at Mach 5+ (1500°C). The tantalum-10 tungsten rod can also be processed into the shaft of the rocket engine turbopump, which can resist corrosion by liquid oxygen/kerosene medium. The tantalum-10 tungsten rod is also used to produce the heat plugs for re-entry aircraft, which can maintain structural integrity in the high-temperature ablation environment. The maximum working temperature of the tantalum-10 tungsten rod is higher than that of the nickel-based alloy Inconel 718.
3. In the control components of nuclear reactors, the 90% tantalum 10% tungsten bars are used as the guide rods for processing control rods, and they are resistant to borate water corrosion in pressurized water reactors. The liquid metal coolant pump shaft made of Ta10W alloys rods is used in sodium-cooled fast reactors (resistant to sodium corrosion). The isotopic production target support made of tantalum-10 tungsten bars can withstand high-energy proton bombardment.
4. In high-end medical implants, Ta10W alloy rods can be processed into radioactive particle implant needles, which possess both biocompatibility and radiation shielding functions. The bone internal fixator made of Ta-10W alloy bars has a Young's modulus (185 GPa) close to that of human bone, offering the advantage of reducing stress shielding. The proton therapy collimator made of Ta-10W alloy rods: precisely controls the radiation dose to the tumor target area, must comply with ISO 5832-12 implant standards, and the cytotoxicity test: grade 0 (completely non-toxic).
5. Semiconductor single crystal growth equipment. The tantalum tungsten alloys rod is used to fabricate the pulling rods for CZ method single crystal silicon, and it operates in an environment of 1500°C with pure argon gas without any pollution. The tantalum tungsten alloy bar is also used to make the evaporation source support for MBE equipment and the crucible shaft for compound semiconductors.
6. Among the special welding electrode materials, tantalum-10 tungsten rods can be processed into TIG welding electrodes for high-temperature alloys, vacuum electron beam welding fixtures for titanium alloys, and compression rods for superconducting material diffusion welding. The lifespan of the high-temperature alloy TIG welding electrodes is five times that of pure tungsten electrodes.
